FR Review:
What sets The Joffrey School apart is its noncompetitive atmosphere (no auditioning required) and its wide-ranging curriculum. Unlike other top dance schools in the city, The Joffrey is designed not only for the aspiring ballerina, but also for everyone who wants to come to class and work hard. Founded in 1953 by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Alpino, the school attracts dancers of every caliber with an interest in versatility and artistry, essential assets in an ever-evolving dance world.

The large six-studio space in Greenwich Village and a two-studio Chelsea location make ample room for the many dancers who flock to The Joffrey to work up a sweat (sometimes classes can reach 25-30 students). The syllabus is based on the Vaganova method and was written specifically for The Joffrey by Robert Ray. With a focus on ballet, it also includes modern, hip-hop, and character, as well as classes in injury prevention, core strengthening, choreography, music, dance instruction, yoga and pilates. All staff undergo training specific to the Joffrey curriculum and instructors meet regularly to assess student development. Dancers can opt to take classes at their own pace or enroll in the pre-professional program. For those en route to a career in dance, The Joffrey partners with The Kaplan Institute, an online learning program that makes studying from the studio possible.

Due to the varying aspirations of its students The Joffrey School may not be the best spot for the ballet purist. Only a handful or so leave to dance professionally. The programs are challenging but not as demanding as those of selective schools such as ABT and SAB. The flexibility and versatility of its programs make The Joffrey School a superb place for any student eager to work hard and master movement. Those anxious to gain stage-quality instruction may seek a more competitive environment.
