FR Review:
With a world-class faculty, audition-only acceptance, and an international student body, the School of American Ballet is arguably the premiere ballet school in the United States (not to mention the official training academy for The New York City Ballet). SAB is designed for the aspiring professional, not the recreational dancer. With studios located in Lincoln Center, dancers learn from an elite faculty, including Peter Martins, Susan Pilar, and Darci Kistler.

Students study classical ballet with a strong emphasis on the Balanchine aesthetic and are required to make a six-day (2 classes per day) commitment by intermediate level (ages 12-14). At the advanced level (around age 15) students are required to arrange their academic schedules to revolve around dance classes. The chief goal of the school is to produce dancers that can feed directly into The New York City Ballet. SAB thus enforces strict attendance policies and monitors each student's progress carefully. The school's affiliation with the company affords many students the opportunity to perform in various ballets in addition to its annual Nutcracker.

The heavy class load and high demands of rehearsals and performance make SAB for those interested in a professional dancing career only. The School of American Ballet is thus the optimum training ground for disciplined and dedicated dancers, eager for more than the fantasy of bright lights, tutus, and tiaras.
