FR Review:
Ballet Academy East is a rare find, offering a program for the inner dancer in everyone, with everything from mother and child classes and yoga to intensive ballet and pas de deux. A myriad of ballet's elite compile the faculty, which includes Darla Hoover, Peter Frame, and Cheryl Yeager. Nestled three flights above Third Avenue in the low nineties, the school's ambiance is intimate and understated. Yet the studios are sizable and some sources say pre-professional training is on par with that of larger schools, such as SAB and ABT.

For the career-driven dancer BAE offers a supportive atmosphere and individual attention which results from small class size (with usually no more than 12 dancers per class). Unlike other ballet schools in the city, BAE also offers a less intensive program of enrichment classes for the recreational dancer, as well as open classes for adults and teens. The pre-professional program is by audition only and has a minimum weekly class requirement and a strict absence policy. However, open and enrichment classes welcome all levels and have little to no attendance requirements. Pre-professional dancers study a core curriculum of ballet technique, pointe & variations and pas de deux. Pilates, Character, and Modern are incorporated into the syllabus as well, yet comprise a small portion of overall study.

The staff stress clean and strong technique. BAE insists that such training creates versatile (and thus employable) dancers. The school also has an extensive program for youngsters, with mommy and child classes for children as young as two and creative movement for ages three to six, in addition to classes in tap, drama, pre-ballet, and even yoga. Overall, Ballet Academy East boasts challenging programs and an acclaimed faculty for both the recreational and pre-professional dancer in a warm and unpretentious setting.
