FR Review:
Jivamukti, equipped for the yogi, but welcoming to all, offers an oasis for physical and spiritual sculpting for an array of New Yorkers.
The Jivamukti method is a style of Hatha Yoga. Jivamukti means "liberation from separation," the ultimate state of enlightenment and fundamental goal of the practice. Each class is guided by a theme, which is supported by Sanskirt chanting (yes, chanting is part of every class), readings, and references from spiritual texts.

Located below Union Square, the space is expansive, ornate, and unapologetically spiritual; before you reach one of three studios you feel as though you have entered life on a calmer plane. The lighting is dim, the halls are long and wide and hum with sounds of waterfalls and chirping birds. Shoes are to be left by the entrance, but no need to be grossed out, plush rugs massage your feet on the walk to the dressing room. Should you need pre or post-workout fuel there is an organic café that serves a variety of tasty salads, sandwiches, juices, smoothies, and desserts, all vegetarian.

Classes are either an hour or an hour and a half and run all day, starting at 7am with the last class at 9pm. Since classes are open to all, they are packed and regularly include students of multiple levels. Advanced students are advised to enhance their practice (typically adding binds or lifting a limb from the floor for an extra challenge) while amateurs are encouraged to use blocks and simplified poses to lessen the intensity. If you need extra motivation to roll out a mat, it may help to know that a handful of Hollywood elite practice their poses at Jivamukti. There is always a chance of running into Maggie Gyllenhaal in the hallway.

In addition to group classes, the studio offers private sessions, in-class private instruction, massage therapy, acupuncture, shamanic healing and detox cleansing, and integrated yoga sessions (for those with injuries). All instructors must be certified after a one-month Jivamukti specific teacher training.

Jivamukti is outfitted for the true yogi yet also attracts those who take class sporadically. Chanting and emphasis on spirituality make it a place for someone eager to achieve Zen and feel a connection with the Universe. If the idea of singing in a room full of strangers ignites unease then Jivamukti is not the studio for you.
