FR Review:
Mr. Ned Custom Tailor is a "great fit" for discerning gentlemen who have tired of made-to-measure, but don't want to make the leap to Savile Row. The garments crafted at this Flatiron shop are cut to customers' exact measurements and the most important components are sewn by hand, including the collar, lapel, pockets and button holes. Tuxedos, sport coats, slacks and overcoats are also on offer (no dress shirts, though). Though he has earned some press designing snugly fitting corduroy suits for hipster director Wes Anderson, Mr. Ned isn't known for one particular style or fit. Clients do say it helps to go in with "at least some knowledge of what you're after" or you "might not get exactly what you're looking for."
The "straightforward" and "accommodating" owner, Vahram Mateosian, does all the measuring, cutting and fittings personally. Mateosian took the nearly 50-year-old business over from his father--the original Mr. Ned--in 1999. The bustling shop boasts an ample fabric selection, ranging from Vitale Barberis to Loro Piana, and clients discuss style and get measured out front. Two more fittings and six weeks later, the custom-made suits are ready to go, typically costing between $850 and $1200. Clients hail prices as "an extremely good value" for the "impressive level of meticulousness" and overall quality of fit.
Representative Client Comments:
"I couldn't be happier with the suits I get from Mr. Ned." "I love getting a peek at the workers in back, where everything is pieced together." "They're able to keep prices in check because volume is high." "Vahram is a good judge of style and fashion." "Even the best-dressed guy in the office asked me where I get my suits made--he's been getting his suits from Mr. Ned ever since." "A phenomenal value." "These guys are still admirably old school."
