FR Review:
Like his furniture restoration company down the hall, Joseph Biunno's Finials Unlimited displays the type of handmade craftsmanship that is disappearing in today's mass-produced world. At Finials, Biunno's nine artisans, who were all classically trained in Europe or in-shop, manufacture unique curtain hardware (poles, rings, finials). They also do finishes such as gold leaf and custom painting. Products are made of wood, metal and composition (resin), and the business has over four hundred designs. They cover traditional, Art Deco, Modern, French and English. A unique feature is that Biunno's craftsmen also do fully custom work. If you can design it, they will make it, and all the work is done onsite on Borden Avenue.

Biunno started Finials Unlimited in 1984 as an offshoot of his family's successful custom furniture business and the company has been gaining notoriety among New York's most influential designers ever since. The quality of the work done there is so well respected that FIT and Parsons School of Design bring their students in for workroom tours. Clientele at Finials is generally trade-oriented, but Biunno is open to working with individuals. He says that he never turns away a sale; he can recommend some curtain makers, but he does not make curtains at his shop. Timing varies according to the materials and complexity of the design. (It might take a day or more to carve a design in wood, while composition takes half an hour). Finials Unlimited ships coast-to-coast and will also go worldwide. Finial prices range from $50 (for unfinished composition) each to $4,000 each, rods from $15 per foot for a plain design to $300 per foot for a highly decorative one. Rings range from $6 to $90 each. These beautiful finals, rods and rings certainly come at a price, but for a firm that is tried, true and tested by the best in the biz, people are happy to pay for a decorative element that approaches the level of high art.
