If you want to walk on functional works of art, MIR Hardwood Design may be the company for you. Founded in 1946, we hear this California flooring company is small enough to take care of customer needs but large enough to deal with the biggest projects. Mark Chaplya, the principal of the company, has a Master’s Degree in sculpture from his home country of Ukraine. As an artist, he carved in marble and wood, so when he came to America in 1993, he began to apply his sculpting skills to custom floor design. After working his way up the hierarchy, Chaplya eventually took over MIR in 2010.
Most of MIR’s projects are located in the greater Los Angeles area and the company focus is the high-end residential market (4000-16,000 square feet of flooring, both interior and exterior). There are twenty employees, which includes three crews (two installation and one finishing). The most common project is custom parquet, which MIR can do with stone, wood and leather, as well as wood. The firm also inlays custom medallions in these same materials. All the work is done by hand. Refinishing, restoration, wood supply, radiant systems, soundproofing and floating installations are also services that they can provide. MIR only uses custom finishes, mostly with water-based polyurethane, oil or wax, and they always use custom-made stains. To avoid the swirl marks from buffing machines, all of MIR’s floors are finished by hand with sandpaper. All wood and products are FSC-certified, and a majority of the wood is reclaimed. Clients most frequently request oak and walnut, but MIR does install exotics such as Burmese teak and Ipê.
