FR Review:
Though custom frames may be one of the last aspects people consider in a decorating project, Adrian Algañaraz of Acanthus & Reed believes it can make all the difference. As an avid art collector, Algañaraz’s focus is works on paper (which includes photography). He stresses that how you treat your artwork is most important. From backing to matting to attachment and glass, Algañaraz maintains that experience and craftsmanship are vital in dealing with your precious art.

Before opening Acanthus & Reed in 1975, Algañaraz was a cabinetmaker, which explains his love of woodworking. He works with key vendors such as installers and restorers and also has six employees in his sitting shop, which includes a crew of carvers, gilders and woodworkers. All the frames at Acanthus & Reed are reproductions. The shop does not carry antiques. A distinctive offering at the shop is a fully custom frame; if you can sketch on a piece of paper what you want the frame to look like, the team will make it for you. Clients say Algañaraz can handle anything with artwork from start to finish and that he has a wealth of knowledge with respect to glassing options. The most expensive work ever framed at Acanthus & Reed was a Bruegel, but it is not uncommon to see Picasso and Miró prints that have received Algañaraz ‘s master touch. Frames at Acanthus & Reed are priced by the linear foot and can get quite expensive depending on the customer’s choice. A 50% deposit is required upfront. When it’s requested, staff will go to clients’ homes to do picture hanging, and the installation is included in the price of the frame. The staff at Acanthus & Reed frequently works with interior designers, and we hear that they are particularly attuned to dealing with the trade. For reassurance that your art is being handled properly, especially works on paper, seek out Acanthus & Reed for a plethora of choices and decades of experience.
