FR Review:
The mission of Big Reuse is to reduce construction and demolition waste by selling salvaged and surplus building materials. In fact, they are New York City’s only non-profit retail outlet for these items. Founded in 2004 with two warehouses (one in Astoria and one in Gowanus), the organization runs on donations of construction and demolition materials. Partnered with Community Environmental Center, Big Reuse not only keeps resources out of landfills, but also donates the proceeds from the sale of these items to community and environmental organizations. Big Reuse has both full-time employees volunteers, as well as over 75 tons of doors, flooring, sinks, toilets, bathtubs, lighting, and windows, architectural elements, cabinets and furniture. The organization also gets items from the Landmarks Preservation Commission (Big Reuse once procured historical items from the old post office in Grand Central Terminal).
Those who donate receive the maximum tax-deduction value. Also, Big Reuse has a deconstruction team that can carefully dismantle a building to maximize re-use and recycling of supplies. The team is fully insured, and if you use its deconstruction service, you'll also receive a tax deduction for donated items. Big Reuse’s clients include contractors, set designers for film and theater, artists and individuals just looking for a good deal or something special. At 30-70 percent off retail, expect to go through a lot of items that will need a thorough cleaning at the very least (a full restoration at most), but for the adventuresome shopper, nothing quite beats the thrill of a good deal or that one-of-a-kind find.
Representative Client Comments:
“The retail stores are great. Not sure if the average person would get into it, but I always find things there.” “I pick up and drop off regularly.” “You can’t get a better deal.” “The people who work there are great, knowledgeable and friendly.” “Sustainable, green and I get great stuff. Win, win if you ask me.”
