FR Review:
Sebastian Quinn’s unabashedly modern designs lean towards minimalism and sustainability. Interested in the way things are assembled, he views architecture as an expression of language through structure with an emphasis on process and materials, not aesthetic. Unsurprisingly, Quinn’s highbrow view of craft has caused him to be very interested in method. We hear that he often likes to work in model and is very hands on as an architect and has a thorough understanding with contractors. Quinn is onsite two days a week during construction. He is attentive to sustainability as an inherent part of building, and is developing patents related to solar devices.
Originally from Maine, Quinn received his Master’s of Architecture in 2006 from Washington University in Seattle. He then went on to work for Zak Architecture in San Francisco and Atelier Jones and Miller where he became LEED accredited. In 2009, he opened his own practice and was licensed in 2012. Quinn’s work is a mixture of small offices and homes, twenty percent ground up and eighty percent renovation. Clients are “creative people who have their own stories about things,” especially those who can appreciate non-traditional design. Quinn mostly works in the New York Metropolitan area and his projects range from five hundred to five thousand square feet. Quinn charges an affordable design fee, which usually averages out to ten percent of the total construction costs. He will also get involved in interior design. For tiles and fixtures, drapes and carpets, he passes the trade discount directly to the client and for furniture he charges an average markup over net.
Representative Client Comments:
"Sebastian Quinn is a highly knowledgeable and talented young architect. We worked together on an unconventional low budget but high design project for my design studio in Nyack, NY. He was very energetic and passionate about the design process and meticulous in his approach to managing the construction to be sure the final result met our high standards." "Sebastian was the architect that actually designed our new office space in Harlem. We found a raw space and his vision for the space was great. We are a not for profit and did not want a glamorous space. We wanted something functional but also pleasant. We have an open office environment with lots of light. He is very detailed and organized, very patient and will listen to the client. He came up with a great concept for the space and we worked through multiple revisions. He used the space efficiently and ensured that the light would flow even in the space with less windows." "A few minor things were resolved quickly. I would work with him again in a heartbeat. He also follows up after you are fully moved in to make sure that you are satisfied. Everybody that comes to visit is impressed with the office."
