FR Review:
A boutique lighting design firm, 521 Atelier is distinguished by a timeless, understated style. Helmed by Claudia Librett, the firm focuses on high-end residential, often working with art collectors to put their pieces in the best light. In addition to aesthetic effects, 521 is able to reduce energy consumption by using up-to-the-minute technology. Librett has worked on boats, but most of her projects are large single-family homes (the largest was 40,000 square feet) in the New York and Connecticut area.
Librett was one of the first graduates of the lighting design and environmental design program at Parsons. She has also studied the history of decorative arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and is a member of both the International Association of Lighting Designers and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. She started 521 Atelier in the early 80s and has been building a loyal client base ever since. Librett is the sole designer at 521 Atelier, though she has two other employees who do lighting and CAD work. She is paid an initial retainer (the cost for work done in a month), which is applied to the final invoice. Librett also charges a design fee, which is based upon a combination of high hourly and an average markup over net purchases. While her more extensive and complex projects can be quite expensive, we hear that if someone gives her a budget, she’ll stick to it. For a combination of aesthetic grace and technological innovation, 521 Atelier is highly recommended.
Representative Client Comments:
“She has exquisite taste and really cares about the end product.” “I work with a lot of designers, and Claudia has a good design vocabulary.” “She has many high-end clients.” “I think she’s one of the few people out there who really knows lighting. A lot of people call themselves ‘lighting designers,’ but she’s the real deal.” “Claudia knows all the technical aspects of lighting and works hard to keep up with the latest technology.”
