FR Review:
Bearing the same name as the nineteenth century laundress, Mrs. Roles proves that “by hand” really does garner the best results. Daniel Lutzky, the third generation owner of his family business, has been at the company since 1975 and takes pride in Mrs. Roles’ reputation for extreme care. The company’s forte is hand-laundry, specializing in hand finishing (ironing by hand instead of with a machine, which Lutzky maintains achieves more perfect results.)
The firm picks up and delivers to private residences all over New York City, Long Island, Connecticut and Westchester. They also pick up from yachts docking in New York harbor, a holdover from when Lutzky’s grandfather used to pick up laundry from ships that came into port in the New York Harbor.
Lutzky has eighteen employees, though he personally handles all of the vintage and antique linens brought to Mrs. Roles. Most of the business, however, is washing and finishing bed sheets and shirts. Shirts done by machine are $6.75 per shirt, and $11.75 if done by hand. (Hand starching is an additional $13.25.) Sheets are $7.50 per sheet by machine and $21.50 by hand. Vintage sheets can be $35-$100 per sheet. Wedding dress cleaning starts at $250 and goes up from there. Preservation and boxing is an additional $125. Prices may be high, but clients swear to Mrs. Roles and would trust no one else with their prized cloth items.
