FR Review:
With a keen eye and specialties in custom furniture and Old World upholstery, we hear Bruno Lopez and the rest of the staff of Atelier de France can do any technique. Of the five employees, three are trade upholsterers trained in France and from France. All of Lopez’s upholsterers have the highest level of instruction, as the French guild program is extensive and includes a five-year apprenticeship along with a two-year certification, which is the equivalent of a Master’s Degree in the United States.
The firm is trusted by some of New York City’s finest institutions, including the Museum of the City of New York and the Seventh Regiment Armory on Park Avenue. Lopez also has a relationship with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and frequently gives lectures and tours there. When doing purely traditional work, ninety-five percent of the seams are hand-sewn. For filling, clients have the choice of four kinds of horsehair, latex foam, and down and can chose the percent of each. Lopez often finds fabric for clients or can direct a customer to the place in which to purchase it.
Atelier de France caters mostly to the trade. The design process is done on paper and involves several hand-done drawings for the clients’ final approval, at which point a fifty percent deposit is required. Lopez charges by the piece, and this level of craftsmanship does not come cheap. But for authentic French upholstery outside of France, Atelier de France is your best bet.
