FR Review:
Christopher Stevens brings a traditional background and impeccable training to an edgier, younger clientele. His comfortable but tailored style and casual, unfussy personality make him a favorite for younger clients with families. We hear that he understands not only how to use space properly, but also how to create practical interiors where “real people” live.
Stevens graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Art History and the History of Architecture. He went on to work for the Guggenheim and the MoMA, but found that museum work left him unfulfilled. Wanting to stretch his creative muscle, he worked with an impressive list of designers including Greg Jordan, Marcy Masterson and Noel Jeffrey. Stevens opened his own firm in 2008.
The firm takes on seven to ten projects at once, two or three of which are “soup to nuts” in scope. Almost all are apartments in New York City ranging from 1,000 to 5,500 square feet, though he has worked in London, Montreal, Connecticut, the Hamptons and Florida. For smaller projects, Stevens will negotiate a flat fee, while larger ones take an average design fee and markup over net. Unpretentious in style and personality, we hear that Stevens has amassed many a loyal client. His business has grown with repeat customers, and Stevens has even done six projects for a single family.
Representative Client Comments:
“Chris is wonderful to work with–he has a great eye, but understands the client’s wants and needs at the same time. It has been a pleasure working with him on several projects.” “With Chris, there’s no drama or attitude. He is professional, polite and he gets things done.” “There’s never any pressuring. I would consider his specialty the ability to understand what the client wants even when the client herself doesn’t understand what she wants! Also, he is so easy to work with—you give him a deadline and it’s done. I have worked on three major projects with him, and he always pulled through on time and at times even under budget. This is a breath of fresh air for a mom of three, not having to worry about getting the job done.” “When I say the job is complete, I mean every single detail is in place.” “Another thing about Chris is that he inspires me... to branch out and try new things without ever taking me out of my comfort zone. I would never work with another designer; I have been beyond satisfied working with Chris.”
