FR Review:
Beloved by generations of clients, House of Heydenryk (HOH) elevates the process of framing to an art form, and the history of the firm would fascinate any europhile. Started in Amsterdam in 1845, HOH built a reputation as premier framers in Europe with pieces in the National Gallery, the Tate, and the Rothschild Collection. In 1936, the great-grandson of the founder brought the company to the United States. Twentieth Century artists Salvador Dalí, Edward Hopper, Fernand Leger, Georgia O’Keeffe and Andrew Wyeth all chose HOH frames for their work. The company's frames hang in such museums as the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Additionally, HOH works with some of the most famous galleries, artists and interior designers working today. (David Easton, Peter Marino and Albert Hadley have all chosen HOH frames for interiors.) HOH frames a wide variety of art from work by Renaissance painters such as Raphael and Titian to such modern artists as Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst.

Now, president, David Mandel, who we hear “strives to make his clients happy” runs House of Heydenryk seamlessly. HOH carries antique frames from the fifteenth century onward. Like other high-end framers, the firm has art installers and offers full restoration services for frames and all artwork including works on canvas, paper, wood and textiles. However, unlike their competitors, a distinguishing feature of HOH is their exclusive designs. Characterized by wormy, textured woods and delicate carvings, only HOH carries the prototypes for these frames. These models are so famous and widely copied that there is a “Heydenryk-genre” of framing. HOH also works with designers and individuals (including professional artists) to develop custom designs, which the company will only make for that particular client.

While House of Heydenryk does carry come commercial grade frames, the majority of their business involves the framing of very special works. The firm’s original designs can range in price from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands depending on the size and labor involved and top antique frames can fetch prices up to a hundred thousand dollars. Clearly not for your average family photo, but for that Monet you just acquired, clients rave House of Heydenryk is “simply the best.”

Representative Client Comments:
“The House of Heydenryk has worked with David Easton Inc. for twenty-five plus years.” “We have used HOH for custom hand-carved and finished frames for client artwork. The HoH has the most extensive and exquisite collection of antique frames and frame designs in both traditional and modern designs. Because of their long history and extensive museum work, they’ve actually created some of the original frames for well-known artists. They know how to handle valuable artwork and speak authoritatively on conservation, appropriate framing choices, etc.” “They’ve also created custom mirror designs for us in both carved wood, gilded wood, and eglomise – David’s always willing to take on a custom project. He’s very reliable in his delivery dates and he’s willing to make samples and mock-ups for client approval.” “We’ve had HOH do restoration of client’s antique frames and mirrors – David and the HoH have an innate understanding about restoration – they help to enhance the piece and not over restore. We want antiques to look like antiques, just the best looking version they can be.” “They’ve supplied us with the nicest faux antique mirror plate, including real hand-silvered mirror plate.” “I enjoy working with HoH because of David Mandel and his artists. They are one of those quirky, only-in-New-York firms that have been around forever and still create beautiful, unique hand-made picture and mirror frames the old-fashioned way. HoH has a range of pricing; although, I think they really shine in doing custom work. I love going to the shop and poking around all the bins containing the thousands of frame designs they can produce.” “House of Heydenryk has been my framer for over four decades.” “They have created frames with superb craftsmanship, that enhance and compliment the individuality of each work of art.” “I have chosen them to frame my official White House portraits, as well as museum and private works.” “I recommend them to artist friends and clients.” “David is so discrete. He would never make my custom frames for another client. What I get from HOH is truly one-of-a-kind.” “HOH has the ability to create frames with taste and respect that reflect the personality of the art.” “Working with Heydenryk for over 20 years has been an absolute pleasure. I have filled houses with their frames: antiques, stock designs or whatever you can dream up." “David and I have shared a synergy that is rare. He has a delightful patience and works with you until you get exactly what you want. “
