FR Review:
Maienza + Wilson is John Maienza and Gregg Wilson, two veteran designers who both embody the phrase "renaissance man." Experts in architecture, design, and real estate development (Maienza even makes films and has a pilot's license), the duo provide clients with a 360 degree set of skills. Stylistically, the firm's projects have run the gamut–they've done everything from cool Pacific modern to warm, antique-heavy traditional on the Upper East Side. In all cases, there's an emphasis on developing the client's personal taste into something invigorating, lovely and livable.
A native of Oak Park Illinois, Maienza grew up in the shadows of Frank Lloyd Wright's home: his roots in architecture go way back. A whirlwind career has taken him from working in Peter Marino's office to an independent practice in Chicago to developing properties in Los Angeles. Within the firm, he takes the lead on design, relying on a holistic approach (everything from art history to engineering plays a part) to develop projects. Wilson is more of a numbers man. Born into a family of California builders that goes back four generations, he keeps the firm's work on time and on budget. However, having collaborated since 1995, Maienza and Wilson possess a rare synergy that has them both doing a bit of everything.
The two-person firm has offices in both New York and LA, though currently their focus is on East Coast work. Charging on a flat fee basis, Maeinza & Wilson can be hired at a reasonable price (especially given the level of expertise), and the lack of markup or hourlies means clients always know what they're going to get. Their portfolio includes an impressive breadth of projects, ranging from large-scale construction to smaller decoration jobs; these are clearly people who can get things done in high-end residential.
