FR Review:
Drawing on his experience as a veteran production designer, Ernie Roth creates meticulous, thoughtful interiors that bristle with cinematic flair. A longtime California resident, Roth creates homes with clients that feel distinctly West Coast, but there's always an element or two that separates his rooms from the pack. Given his experience on countless sets for countless different films, shows, and commercials, it's no surprise that Roth's artistic palette is wider than most. His background also gives him a unique take on lighting and modeling—"I always have the camera's eye in mind," says Roth. Indeed, he will often create animated 3D computer models for clients, allowing them to truly envision the final project.
Roth's design experience goes back to school—he studied at CCA, earning a degree in interior architecture. Roth has been designing spaces since then, mixing his time between film sets and interiors. However, a particularly successful appearance on HGTV's "Designer's Challenge" drove an audience to his door, and since then he's been focusing mainly on interior design.
Roth works with an assistant but handles all details and decisions himself. He works on both commercial projects and residential, with an even split between the two. Roth will do both whole-home projects, or room-by-room, depending on the client's need. In all cases, he prefers to work on a fixed fee basis. Clients are often in the entertainment industry (no shock, given his background). They describe working with Roth as a "great pleasure," and praise him for "reading between the lines and understanding what I mean even if I can't explain it." One client related a story about how Roth learned her favorite color and used it to paint the inside of her bathroom drawers as a surprise. The gesture—thoughtful, sweet, artistic—defines the way Roth's clients see him.
