FR Review:
An interdisciplinary firm covering architecture, interior design and landscape architecture, Sawyer | Berson works closely with clients to realize a shared vision. The firm is known for its comprehensive approach—no one discipline outshines the other but instead combine to produce a result that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. While providing all three services for a project is ideal, Sawyer | Berson has no issue lending just one specialty alongside other professionals. Interior designers who repeatedly work with the firm’s architects report an “impeccable cohesiveness and thoroughness” that makes the collaboration “a pleasure.” Clients say the same type of relationship forms on their end and that their welcomed input makes the process “transparent, educational and fun.” Always sensitive to nuance, Sawyer | Berson conduct rigorous historical, contextual and technical research on every project.

The firm’s principals, Brian Sawyer and John Berson, hold degrees in landscape architecture and architecture from UVA and Harvard, respectively. They met while both working as associates for Robert A. M. Stern, then left to create their own firm in 1999. Between associate architects and designers and support staff, about 25 are in the NYC office, a large number for a design firm, but modest when considering it combines three design categories into one. Thanks to Sawyer | Berson’s decades-long relationship with the Landmarks Preservation Commission, the firm enjoys the challenge of giving traditional spaces a contemporary restoration. Picture a classic, shingled beach house adorned in mid-century modern décor, accompanied by a geometric pool deck fit for a tropical resort, all set against the Atlantic Ocean. The firm’s projects are predominantly in Manhattan and the Hamptons, with projects extending to California, Louisiana and the Caribbean.

To avoid surprises, Sawyer | Berson presents a timeline of 18-24 months with a standard construction percentage charge when they are the sole design firm hired. Clients have reported, however, that their homes took only fourteen months and they noticed the firm intentionally managed the timing so as not to miss two whole summers when working on a beach house. These subtle considerations, along with the firm’s belief that design is simply the combination of logic and care, leave clients feeling they “couldn’t work with anyone else.” AD 100 2014.
