FR Review:
Winding up the driveway to a Paul Brant Williger house is a slow, savory reveal of a dream home only a custom build could convey. Always with a strong sense of entry, his work capitalizes on the west coast's most sought-after views, playing on the thin line between indoors and out. Adept in historic revivals, Williger works in the many estate styles of Southern California (and beyond) to create masterpieces difficult to edit down to a single portfolio. Frequently collaborating with the likes of Madeline Stuart and Timothy Corrigan, the architect’s plans are not a personal showcase but fashioned to be amply furnished. While he leaves the decor itself to the designers, Williger often has a voice in the selection of the finishes, calling on antique terracotta and hand-carved herringbone tile ceilings to fulfill his vision. Furthermore, this “client-facing” firm relies on the strength of its relationships as much as it does the foundation of the home.

It was Frank Lloyd Wright’s biography, gifted to Williger as a young boy, that inspired him to echo his craftsmanship after architecture’s biggest icons. He paved his own way with a B.Arch from the University of Illinois and then went on to Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, where he studied under Robert A.M. Stern. Lifelong aspirations of living in Los Angeles brought the architect across the country, where he built a name for himself as a principal at Appleton & Associates; at the time, the more traditional/classical work went directly to Williger and soon he had a loyal following (one client, who continues to work with him, estimates he’s single-handedly built six to eight homes for her). With the firm’s blessing and a solid client list to start from, Williger opened his own four-person operation in 2013.

Though said to be as easy going and humble as they come, Williger’s pet peeve is a potential collaborator who begins the conversation with, “What’s your fee?” This is not to say that this firm hits over-the-top budgets, but rather that there are no “B-grade” projects on the docket; each receives his undivided attention and commitment to the highest level of craftsmanship. Homes fall within the 8-12,000 square foot range, and while they average around $600-800 per square foot, that number can move into the 1,000’s pretty quickly. But contractors and clients alike say you’re paying for the real deal; that in an industry flooded with “dreamers” Williger is both a technician and an artist, able to create and then execute something that’s both beautiful and buildable. With a knack for keying in on client’s ideas and adapting to any character, Williger has the tools to map out lucid plans for fantasy homes.

Representative Client Comments:
"On our hunt for a new home, all the spec houses out there were sub par. We realized if we wanted our dream home, we'd have to build it ourselves. Paul exceeded our expectations." "Paul was always ready with options and helped us narrow down decisions. He really alleviated the anxiety during the project while still making us feel like we were part of the design process." "My favorite part of the project? I can't pick just one. Let's just say I have a hard time finding reasons to leave the house." "Really innovative solutions and ideas. Paul captures the home and its surroundings in a way that subtly showcases every angle." "Extremely easy to work with. Like a therapist at times. Such a calm demeanor." "Paul always attends the weekly meetings and is on top of every step in the process." "It's a real collaboration between Paul and the interior designer; they each have a say in the other's work which makes for a seamless result."
