FR Review:
The esteemed firm of Murphy, Burnham & Buttrick is distinguished by its commitment to excellence and its strong knowledge base, whether the project be conceived in an internationally modern style or focused on historical preservation. The residential work tends to be quite modern: spare, monochromatic and simple in its elegance. There may be striking stainless steel-clad millwork, translucent glass partitions and a balance of neutral textures resulting in a light-filled, layered respite. The architects also bridge modern and more traditional quite successfully with strong references to historic precedent taken in an innovative direction, such as a wall of classic mullioned glass for light diffusion between rooms. In all cases, the firm is noted for its professionalism and high level of client service.

Partners Harry Buttrick, Mary Burnham and Jeffrey Murphy each bring extensive knowledge to the party. Buttrick has worked as an architect in New York for more than 40 years—he previously founded Buttrick, White & Burtis and has reshaped some of New York's most treasured institutions (Trinity School, Convent of Sacred Heart, St. Bartholomew's Church, St. Thomas's Choir School). Buttrick is an AIA Fellow (1994) and holds B.A. and M.Arch. degrees from Harvard. Burnham (Buttrick's daughter) holds degrees from Penn (summa) and Yale (M.Arch), worked with Richard Meier and Hardy Holtzman and ran her own firm for six years. Murphy holds degrees from U. Virginia and Harvard (M.Arch), worked with I.M. Pei and Gwathmey Siegel and practiced at his own firm for seven years. Their 25-person firm takes on about twenty new projects a year, half residential and half institutional. The principals offer a complete range of architectural, planning, and interior design services.

The firm's residential work varies in scale, from 1,200 to upwards of 8,000 square feet and includes townhouses and loft renovations downtown, apartments uptown and large single-family new home construction. Most of the firm's work is in New York, Connecticut and Florida, including a five-story townhouse in Greenwich Village, a 4,000-square-foot loft on lower Fifth and a 7,000-square-foot new waterfront home in Westport. The firm charges a higher hourly rate or percentage of total construction costs and structures proposals to meet the needs of its clients.
