Checklist provides a niche service for those high-end DIY-ers and overworked parents who need an extra hand to keep their homes in check. Unique to the handyman business, this company operates through its interactive website, where clients can fill out a Honey-Do List, knocking off months worth of work in one visit. From the estimates to the final bill, everything is organized virtually. Clients enlist Checklist to hang curtains, change bulbs, replace bathroom tiles, build custom furniture and do everything in between. Checklist’s intent is prevention; much like a dentist, it offers routine check-ups to keep homes in top shape.
Before starting Checklist in 2011, owner Liz Picarazzi did marketing for American Express, specifically with small businesses. Being a mom and working full-time left little room for home maintenance, unless she sacrificed family time. Disappointed with other handymen, Picarazzi realized there was a real need for this service and that she was the target customer; the opportunity for business presented itself.
Picarazzi has five handymen and an office staff of two to maintain customer service and manage the website. In addition to the Honey-Do List, Checklist offers a line of chic custom storage bins for trash called Citi Bins as well as a ‘space optimization service’ where hollow walls are turned into closets and shelves. This Brooklyn-based company charges by the hour with a four-hour minimum, or by the day, with a slightly higher rate for projects in Manhattan. Clients admit that they could pay an independent handyman to do similar work for less, however the service and reliability of Checklist are worth every penny.
