FR Review:
With talent and inclination, Henry & Co. thoughtfully incorporates the rich experiences of each family’s character into colorful, comely design moments. Partners Elle Clymer and Stephanie Woodmansee are adept at layering patterned fabrics, custom pieces and cherished heirlooms into a tapestry that wows but is never too “decorated.” A lively floral wallpaper serves as backdrop for a room infused with natural light and fetching custom furniture, while down the hall a frame cluster subtly combines black-and-white photography with art by the children. The effect is distinctly American, a bit preppy, a touch rustic and pure happy.
Clymer and Woodmansee met while apprenticing with Ashley Whittaker, who also embodies a colorful take on classic design. Clymer, a Midwesterner, moved to New York to study design at Parsons after majoring in business and marketing at the University of Kansas. Woodmansee, originally from Saratoga, studied design at the Art Institute of Colorado before migrating back to the Northeast. Clients unanimously agree that the partners are a delight to work with–sweet, smart and efficient. The phrase “like new best friends” was heard again and again. They’re the kind of designers who will not only take clients to the D&D building, but insist they actually sit on sofas to make sure they’re comfortable (and have a glass of champagne after).
Clymer and Woodmansee run a small Flatiron office and work on roughly three big projects simultaneously. They will join a project at any stage, but like to “contribute from the floorplan up,” a preference backed by clients, who say the firm was invaluable even before the wiring was in. Henry & Co. charge a standard design fee and a standard markup on product. Generally they set a minimum of “two significant rooms” before taking on a new client. For younger families in particular, Henry & Co. is lauded as a great choice–a charming blend of elegance, tradition, practicality and fun.
