FR Review:
Steeped in the glorious historic but modernized for today, Eric J. Smith's work is described by clients as "stunning perfection." It is said that he has a passion for classical design and Old World craftsmanship, with no detail overlooked yet made practical for modern convenience. Not surprisingly, most say Smith's forte is in historic preservation or new designs that look immediately generational. While classical underpinnings are certainly a strength, recent designs embrace a further clarity and refinement of line. Clients say they very much enjoy the process, especially given Smith's accommodating nature.

Smith graduated from the honors architecture program at the University of Illinois, spending his senior year in Versailles. After becoming registered in Chicago, Smith met David Easton in 1983 on a Lake Forest estate, and a great collaboration commenced. Smith moved to New York the next year to run Easton's drafting department, evolving to Eric J. Smith Architects in 1987. The firm is devoted to a residential practice, with about a third of the work in Manhattan, a third regional and a third elsewhere. Currently there are twenty employees with Smith, all said to be most pleasant and professional. Clients say Smith continues to be their primarily contact, even in long distance relationships, with only five to seven projects concurrently on the table.

With the large and efficient staff, the firm can take on projects as small as a one bedroom and as large as the imagination. More recently, new homes are smaller than they were a decade ago, with clients preferring less overhead, more flexibility and more locations. There is an excellent budgeting process, but materials costs and fees are in the upper end of the range. Such investments are considered to be a timeless, great value.

Representative Client Comments:
"Known for designs with immediate historical elegance." "Can also do 'Greenwich-Relaxed' in a genteel manner that is of extraordinary quality, but looks like you are not trying too hard." "Eric restores my faith in men. He is just such a wonderful human being." "Every detail is perfect." "People say it takes them a few visits to take it all in." "The most amazing service. He is so patient if there are any questions." "Bills are all clear and detailed." "Eric has a very positive attitude. He can solve all problems." "We were sent digital pictures each day as the house was built." "Such a pleasure."
