FR Review:
A veteran interior designer and a classic bohemian, Laura Gottwald’s work reflects an omnivorous intellect–a recent chat with her ranged from Biedermeier textiles to Berber rugs to Animism. Drawing on basic principles of design and an encyclopedic knowledge of artistic movements, she works with clients to create fun, personalized homes. Though her work “leans modern," Gottwald is just as happy executing within a classic vernacular–“Glam Hollywood,” say–as she is mixing and matching a midcentury chair with a Federal console. Indeed, clients say a big strength is her ability to take what they already have and “make it sing again” with a little rearranging, a lick of paint, and a few choice acquisitions. Very much an artist herself, Gottwald communicates particularly well with clients in a creative field–gallerists, writers and musicians take note.

Raised by “Mad Men” ad exec parents, Gottwald studied at RISD and went on to form notable design agency Amperzand (this was before design agencies were “a thing”). Her early career was defined by exploration, ranging from conceptual art t-shirts to typography to product design. In 1987 Gottwald transitioned full time into interiors, landing several high-profile commissions including a redesign of the Algonquin. Over the years she has moved gradually more towards residential projects, often enjoying fruitful collaborations with architects who handle the renovation and site management side, freeing her to immerse herself in the creative challenge.

Operating out of a Flatiron office with one assistant, Gottwald focuses on a select group of clients. Projects range the gamut, from full renovations to more low-key freshen-ups. One gets the sense that Gottwald does anything and everything for beloved clients–when we visited her office, she was taking a break from a tile design project to help one procure a long-coveted photograph. Her fee, usually charged as a flat fee and a markup on product, is a great value for the level of expertise. Recent awards include top prize in hard flooring at NYCxDesign, and Interior Design’s 2017 Best of Year award for tile and stone design. Clients find her an "invaluable resource" and a witty companion for the journey.

Representative Client Comments:
