FR Review:
Robin Henry’s mastery of color is her calling card–she has a penchant for combining hues in an unexpected manner, yielding moments that are both playful and proper. Celadon, ochre, camel and cloud blue gambol through her rooms, adding a vivid touch of joy to classic shapes. Furnishings follow a similar tack, with Henry employing just-so nods to eastern forms (like a beguiling leaf-patterned fabric) and smart vintage pieces (a Fontana Arte mirror, for instance) that give the space character without going too far. All of this is done in a context of family life–Henry, a mother of two herself, designs around the day-to-day reality of scuffs, stains and spills. Clients appreciate this balancing act, saying that their homes work equally well for both playdates and dinner parties.
Henry began her career as a fine artist, painting handmade tiles for designers. An internship for Katie Ridder led to a job and eventually a promotion to principal designer. Henry went out on her own in 2011, taking on mostly whole home projects in New York and Westchester, often for young families whose staid apartments called for a spark of life. Occasionally she goes farther afield, including a few projects in San Francisco. Clients are very positive (“I can’t talk to you rationally about the apartment, I can only gush,” said one) about working with Henry, citing her easygoing manner, her upbeat professionalism and her unerring eye, especially for color. One told us “at the end of the project I realized the colors of the apartment are the exact same colors I have hanging in my closet.”
Working a couple of days from her home in Westport and a few in the city, Henry takes on a small number of projects at a time, handling all design work and logistics herself. She charges a design fee and a standard markup on product for her services. References happily note that "all white isn’t really her thing,” but that she can “go there if need be.” They go on to say that Henry is the “best of both worlds’– a true artist with a distinct voice who loves to collaborate with clients for a look that is fun, stylish and classic. –Fred Nicolaus
