With distinct Mies-inspired modern minimalist style, MR Architecture develops intriguing designs with a flash of rhythm that are never cold or overstyled. Every object of the décor is chosen carefully and precisely, and is right for that space and time. Principal David Mann’s signature style incorporates raw materials such as modest brushed steel, honed marble and oxidized bronze which are brought to their maximum sensuality with the juxtaposition of slices of glamour such as a brightened lacquer. Furnishings are holistically built into the sleek framework, more like art or architecture rather than humble upholstery. His work makes a statement, tells a story, speaks to the soul of the space and is often selected for publication.
While residential projects make up the majority of the firm's portfolio, many designers channel Mann’s verve to bolster their brand. Starting with the award-winning, sui generis Takashimaya, Mann made his fashion statement. Iconically, Tory Burch developed her sumptuously orange-lacquered shops with Mann, and many other have followed suit including Christian Dior, J. Mendel, Jo Malone, Lanvin, Philip Lim and Trina Turk. Residential projects project this same joy and sense of awareness be it angular, stark modernism or spare, refreshed art nouveau. The designs speak to a lifestyle of pared values, straight shooting and sustainable ideals.
Created in 1995 by sole principal David Mann, a graduate of Pratt, MR Architecture currently employs 38. Sources tell us Mann is a very hands-on principal "with no attitude" and that the staff is very responsive. The firm takes on about ten residences each year, most of which for whom it also does the interior design. The firm charges less than a standard percentage of overall construction costs. They are said to excel at working with highly involved clients, but if the client prefers they can also "take the ball and run with it." AD 100 2014
