FR Review:
Bennett Leifer is a young designer with a journeyman’s resume and a veteran’s eye. Drawing on time spent in the offices of a range of industry luminaries (from Juan Pablo Molyneux to Robert A.M. Stern), Leifer creates homes with balance, polish and poise. Rooms are layered with rich detail and enhanced by a deep knowledge of the process–this is a designer who knows not only antiques and art history but also how the stitching on the underside of a cushion should look. The overall aesthetic is tailored and transitional-to-modern, with clean lines balanced by sumptuous fabrics. Within that framework, Leifer is free to create unique effects to the delight of his clients. In one otherwise unused bathroom corner, he used lacquered peacock feathers as a wall treatment to create an enchanting, dramatic space in technicolor Hitchcock green.
Leifer studied art history and business at Skidmore. In addition to his time with J.P. Molyneux and Robert A.M. Stern, he has worked with Scott Snyder and for Ralph Lauren, resulting in an exceedingly well-rounded CV. Leifer went out on his own in 2013 and currently fields a staff of two, taking on a small number of projects at a time. The firm charges a design fee and standard markup on product to cover costs. Clients–who include both homeowners and real-estate professionals–sing Leifer’s praises, saying he “can turn any space into something special.” In person, he is both professional and witty, always focused yet ready with a joke if the occasion calls for it. References predict "big things to come” for this “rare talent” who has developed a compelling portfolio only a few years into his solo practice.–Fred Nicolaus
