FR Review:
Lisa Sternfeld’s classic modern style, with its soft lines and lush fabrics, evokes a cool, calm and collected look that has won her a steady following. Her residential clientele is a mix of Upper East Siders, young couples in TriBeCa and second and third homeowners in Bridgehampton and Martha’s Vineyard. Sternfeld revels in finding beautifully crafted objects for clients–pieces with a history and integrity all their own. She blends them with tasteful fabrics and subtle colors into a compelling mix of old and new. In terms of personality, Sternfeld does not drop balls or ruffle feathers–clients describe her as the epitome of organization, availability and diplomacy.

Sternfeld initially graduated from Parsons with a degree in design marketing, and spent several years working for companies like Walt Disney and Coach. She honed her business acumen, but eventually wished to pursue something more hands-on, so she returned to Parsons to study interior design. Upon her second graduation, she immediately went to work for design maven Thomas O’Brien. In 2006 she decided to go solo, launching Lisa Sternfeld Interior Design. Sternfeld has a staff of four but does all design work herself. Sternfeld works on between five and eight jobs at a time and can handle gut renovations–recent projects have seen her taking on everything from Upper East Side apartments to a Robert A.M. Stern-designed high-rise in Connecticut.

With a minimum budget of approximately $250,000, Sternfeld doesn’t typically take on one- or two-room projects, but has been known to make exceptions for clients she particularly connects with. She charges a retainer, whereas design fees are charged by the hour, at between $200 and $225. Her markup ranges from 25 to 30 percent including markup on purchases, workroom, oversight and millwork. Sternfeld is considered extremely conscious of budget and knows where to incorporate less-expensive pieces if necessary. Those looking for significant guidance in the design process and a very detailed, polished look that meets budget should surely consider Sternfeld.

Representative Client Comments:
“Lisa was very conscious of our budget—if we decided to bring in a piece that was on the more expensive side, she’d be sure to incorporate a less-expensive piece elsewhere in order to stay in line.” “I’m a fan of how Lisa mixes old and new—she layers things beautifully.” “A small issue came up with a piece of furniture a few months after the project wrapped and Lisa immediately had the piece picked up for repair.” “The project was completely turned around in 90 days–Lisa was amazingly effective.” “Lisa was very even-tempered–the consummate professional.” “With Lisa, every inch of the space is styled to a ‘T.’” “Lisa is involved in everything—she’s on site all the time.” “Lisa’s style is very clean.” “She really approaches every project from a fresh perspective—you won’t be getting recycled concepts or the same furniture over and over.” “Everybody walks into my place and says ‘wow.’”
