FR Review:
Respecting the architecture at hand, Jonathan Barnett adapts his style to “create beauty out of the chaos within.” Muted, classic colors on a clean-lined, contemporary scale are heightened by eclectic and luscious pieces (often a reupholstered heirloom or rare painting) that can turn the look slightly modern, or traditional, or even French country—whichever the client requests. Barnett further customizes his spaces with bespoke pieces and built-ins, and is known to pick up any slack leftover from subcontractors on site. While some clients know the designer through their shared yoga practice, other more “challenging” personalities seek him out for his zen-like, disciplined composure. However high or low maintenance the client, showroom managers admire Barnett’s ability to keep them all at bay while still maintaining an open dialogue.

Growing up in South Africa, Barnett was accustomed mostly to English interiors until he was hired to work for an established local designer during summer breaks from school; he recalls the firm’s look resembling the contemporary aesthetic commonly found in Southern California, making hi move to LA an easy transition. Once there, what began as an associate role in a design showroom quickly turned into a side operation as the lead designer for regular customers - including Sally Field. In 1982 Barnett broke out on his own and established his firm, now a five-person operation.

Barnett undertakes four projects at once ranging in size from 9,000 to a whopping 25,000 square feet (with some commercial work in the mix). In order to gauge his client’s vision and pair it with a realistic budget, he begins each project by presenting a plan with a fairly detailed layout factoring in average high-end prices for each detail. Based on this number, clients elect to go up or down—”up” being top of the line everything and “down” meaning they’ll pay a visit or two to Restoration Hardware. We hear Barnett stays true to the selection budget-wise and fully commits to the vision aesthetically, his entire approach based off of their decision. Whether up or down, Barnett’s dependable work ethic and artful eye help declutter and bring symmetry to homes in need of balance and personality.

Representative Client Comments:
"Talented, thorough, artistic." "Jonathan commands the job site from the start. He gets everyone on the same page then oversees each task and stays on top of everyone until the end." "We modernized some of my older pieces, purchased antiques, visited Restoration Hardware and made custom pieces from Holly Hunt and Donghia." "Jonathan really makes you feel comfortable with the plans and makes you feel confident that you're going to get what you want." "When he comes into the showroom with a client, which he will do in the beginning, he is very precise, even then. He doesn't let them flip flop, and they respect his direction. It really makes my life easier." "He's a joy yo work with and also very professional, especially when it comes to paperwork and billing."
