FR Review:
Indigo is but one hue along the color spectrum of Studio Blu’s acclaimed palette. Deep purple walls, green and yellow hand-painted tile inlays and red lacquered millwork are par for the course for principal Adrienne Mascaro. Even an all-white room by this designer, heavy in patterns and textiles with statement pieces like a swinging chair or fur rug, feels colorful. Often bringing a contemporary flair into classic Spanish style or warming up modern homes, Mascaro helps first-time renovators (and stubborn DIY-ers) finally create the lifestyle they’ve been dreaming of. Using her own wit and charm as a catalyst, Mascaro encourages her clients to surrender to the process and let their personalities go boldly on display throughout the house.
While studying theater at Western Illinois University, Mascaro fixated on the concept that a setting can both shape and reflect those who dwell in it. Her appreciation for scenery soon evolved into a role behind the curtain; it led her to LA where she worked for Warner Bros. and a handful of other major studios as a set designer. Production being the fleeting industry it is, Mascaro, who also holds a degree in interior architecture from the International Academy of Design, turned to the real life characters in the residential industry. Strong referrals and repeat clientele, some of them execs from her past life in entertainment, helped Mascaro launch Studio Blu in 1999 and continue to serve as the basis for her commissions in Southern California and wherever vacation homes may pop up.
Mascaro is known for being respectful of clients’ anxieties concerning change and is willing to work with them at all stages. What she calls “home therapy” may involve a room remodel or whole-house consultation, of which she takes on about three at once and charges a reasonable flat rate. At the same time the designer is busy at work with several ground-up structures as large as 10,000 square feet and valued at $15 million. With her standard design fee and product mark-up and knack for thinking on her feet with exceptional creativity, Mascaro is a sigh of relief when outside aspects of the project go awry. Working with a design assistant or two at most, Mascaro has both hands on deck at all times; we hear she often saves the day with her painstakingly detailed paperwork. Once reluctant, happy homeowners all agree that their polished, mature (albeit bright and fun) interiors could never have reached that level of composure and completeness without the fresh, involved approach of Studio Blu.
