FR Review:
Lori Weatherly designs homes that that are rooted in tradition and executed with calm, elegance and subtlety. Though she has worked in a range of styles and palettes, generally speaking the colors are understated, the lines are tranquil and the furnishing is graceful. One client described a high-backed armchair that nicely sums up the Weatherly approach: they had purchased the piece because of its provenance and beauty, but it had quickly became a favorite place to sit and read the Sunday Times–context, form and function, all wrapped in olive green velvet. In person, Weatherly has a steady confidence and a calming lucidity of thought–in another life, she would have been an art history professor. This is a designer who knows what works and knows how to explain it. After earning a bachelor’s at Wake Forest and a painting MFA at Rutgers, Weatherly began her career at Kohn Pederson Fox in the gilded Eighties, working on opulent corporate offices. After her stint there, she formed her own practice and began taking on more residential work. Weatherly later formed a partnership with blue chip architectural firm Cooper Robertson and Partners, working on both public and private projects (including the Whitney Museum of American Art). Her collaboration with CRP speaks to her comfort working with architects–Weatherly has “an immense respect and understanding for the practice of architecture” and truly “speaks their language,” making her a great team player on a large project. Running a one-woman show, Weatherly takes a select number of jobs at a time and handles all details. A good portion work is on the UWS, though she has gone as far afield as the Caribbean for clients (who include artists, writers, architects and bankers). Weatherly’s rates, charged as a markup, are standard for the industry. She will do smaller projects if there’s a design challenge involved, but would prefer not to work on a consultancy basis. Clients describe her as “intelligent, passionate, open and down-to-earth,” saying Weatherly has the knowledge and skills but doesn’t fit the “interior designer” stereotypes (no teacup poodles in four-figure handbags). One client said, “a friend of mine told us: ’I don’t know anyone else who is having as much fun as you are during your renovation.’”
Representative Client Comments:
“We went shopping and all of her choices were just ‘yes yes yes.’” “We consider her a friend.” “Her knowledge is really complete, it’s not just pretty things, it’s the history behind them.” “We were on time and budget.” “We started working with her on a very simple decorating project, but then moved on to a ground-up construction. She was amazing on both jobs.” “A great team player.” “Not a ‘yes’ person, she’ll tell you her honest opinion.” “She respected our opinion and intelligence.”
