FR Review:
As she commands the jobsite, Valerie Dahan’s demeanor—striking yet composed, with a “European flair”—lets clients know they’re in good hands, and good taste. Architecturally trained, this fashion-turned-interior designer’s comprehensive approach is the remedy for any home in need of a renaissance. Summed up by one source as “clean lines and happy colors,” the look is transitional with a lean towards the contemporary side; it’s a brighter, clarified version of what once was. In the same way that a bold accessory can transform a look on the catwalk, Dahan’s rooms always include an unexpected element—matte black sconces, a velvet couch—that elevate them from the predictable.

Raised in Morocco with frequent family trips to France, Dahan was spoiled by some of the world’s most wondrous architecture, and recalls “always looking up” as she roamed city streets. Equally influential was her mother, who Dahan says would “obsess over presentation—even if it was just the family meal that night.” It was also her mother who encouraged her to pursue (and rediscover) architecture and design; Dahan moved to LA in 1975 to earn her BS in design from UCLA, went on to receive a Masters from Southern California Institute of Architecture, and began her career shortly thereafter. As her own family began to grow, Dahan took a step back from the trade and tapped into her skills in fashion to design her own clothing line. Soon customers became friends, and word got around that Dahan had a knack for interiors; already witness to her good eye and work ethic, clientele began to overlap into home decor and soon Dahan was pulled back in.

Residential clients agree Dahan’s experience as a personal stylist allow her to really tap into their character and let the interiors celebrate their quirks; that she has a worldly perspective and background in architecture gives them the confidence the job will be executed with precision. She'll mix and match heirloom antiques and art into her designs, and respects their sentiment, however, Dahan isn’t afraid to say when something old just has to go. This “tell it like it is” mentality moves work along and allows the designer and her two assistants to take on six or so projects at once, typically in the Pacific Palisades, Brentwood and Manhattan Beach, and ranging from a home office reno to the construction of a new 14,000 square foot estate. For many clients, their Dahan-styled space is the beginning of a new chapter in their lives; whether empty-nesters or finally reaching hard-earned success, they’re ready for their dream home. Coming in under budget thanks to Dahan’s middle-of-the-road fees, it’s not uncommon for clients to keep the designer on hand to fill the closets she just installed, bringing the makeover full circle.

Representative Client Comments:
"We were living in a cookie-cutter home and had just cut ties with our former designer - Valerie saved the day. She made everything brighter, more feminine, and changed everything she possibly could within our limited budget and timeline. The home feels happy." "She definitely comes in with a vision in mind but is very easy to work with and listens to your needs. She learns to really know you, understand your moods, calms you down when you need it." "After the first project Valerie did for me, everything I do now has to be Valerie-approved!" "Valerie has an amazing sense of color." "She really brings her work in fashion into the home - it's not just a home, but a lifestyle, an extension of the client. Valerie really thinks about every accessory. The home becomes a translation of the client's style, with all the quirks, color and personality." "Her work ethic is amazing, she is very honest and works tirelessly. She thinks outside the box and - because of her European background - brings an outside perspective and flair." "Budget-wise Valerie can satisfy a multitude of needs, but her taste isn't a bargain taste. But she isn't about sticking to labels and isn't afraid to use something from Ikea if it makes sense without compromising quality." "Valerie sees like an architect - she has the vision to work a room to its full potential." "She's funny, charming and giving to a fault."
