FR Review:
O’Neill Rose offers an elegant take on modernism–their work, filled with simple shapes and natural light, is a close union of form and function. Helmed by partners Devin O’Neill and Faith Rose, the firm's projects tend to be thoughtful and spare. Absent splashy decorative filiigrees, more “design-y” moments (a natural-wood interior wall perforated with a constellation of round holes, the occasional splash of royal blue) land with joyful impact. In the “function” department, references say their ability goes beyond “putting coat racks into the right place” and into a more holistic realm where the clients’ habits, hopes and dreams are all taken into consideration. One recent project, a residence designed to accommodate the intertwined needs of a multi-generational family living in the same Queens house, showcases the firms’ remarkably nuanced approach: its as much a PhD thesis in sociology and psychology as it is a home.

O’Neill and Rose (who are married) met while completing their M. Archs at Yale. They share a similar aesthetic and an intense love of craft, though in demeanor they diverge - “Devin is the obsessive, Faith is the sunny people person. They’re both intellectually voracious, and witty." O’Neill began his career in the art world, working for accomplished sculptors like Alan Wexler and Vito Acconci before devoting himself to architecture. Rose’s background is more varied: she went to Amherst on a classical piano scholarship, then switched to Russian Literature, all before her masters. After graduation, Rose's career was mostly in public service: for over a decade she headed the Design Excellence Program for the city of New York, overseeing the design and construction of over 200 public buildings. Though they’ve both been in practice for years, the two only formalized their professional partnership in 2016, making it a young firm of veterans.

Currently fielding a small office and focusing on a handful of projects, O’Neill Rose generally offers a full-service package; they will usually take the lead on projects, and often deliver interior design as well. Their fee, charged as a percentage of construction, is standard for architects of this caliber. Some clients come to rely on their planning skills, saying “their approach is intellectual, but they know what works and what doesn’t,” others take it a step further: “another architect had my project underwater for years, O’Neill Rose swooped in and saved it, they’re heroes.”

Representative Client Comments:
“Their drawings and plans are very careful, more so than anyone else I’ve ever worked with.” “They make use of materials that aren’t common in the industry.”“They were very diligent and more budget conscious than they even needed to be.” “I remember they told me that ‘a room should stand on light and proportion, and should need very little furniture to finish it’ - the finished project is a testament to that.” “We had some pre-existing stuff, not furniture but huge volumes of stone and tile we had sourced and imported. Normally that would be a lot to ask a new architect to incorporate, but the did, and wonderfully.” “Definitely more modern than traditional.” “Devin knows about construction, he’s not going to spec something that can’t be built.” “It’s not even so much the design stuff, it’s the stuff like - what floor do we put the kitchen on? They knew the answers to those kinds of questions.”
