In business for over 35 years, HartmanBaldwin has skillfully executed its take on the Southern California home. Specially recognized for their residential projects, the firm is often called on to work on unique properties, or with a historic feel. However, in recent years HartmanBaldwin has honed its contemporary chops with a warm take on California modernism. References tell us it's not so much about a specific aesthetic with HartmanBaldwin, but the process, which they say is "so smooth, it doesn't feel like a construction project."
Founded in 1984, as a partnership, now Bill Baldwin is the sole principal and has been for over a decade. He brings a unique background in both philosophy and art and a distinct point of view to his work: Baldwin is as likely to reference Plato in conversation as he is to talk drywall. Currently, he supervises an office of forty which include seven Architects, four Interior Designers, and four Construction Managers directly working on roughly fifteen projects at a time. Most clients come to HartmanBaldwin for the full package (architecture, interior design and construction of their homes-or renovation), but the company has collaborated with some of the most notable interior designers, like Michael Smith, as in their latest Hancock Park project. Geographically, their work spans well beyond the firm's Pasadena headquarters including Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, Calabasas and everything in between.
Most references told us the firm was not cheap but a great value, and one client rep called them "an incredible bargain, compared to the competition." Because the firm usually supervises all aspects of a project, they can exercise a great degree of control on budgeting, and Baldwin told us their initial estimates are usually accurate within 6% of final construction costs (by typical industry standards, they're very precise). Most praise, however, is focused around the people and the good vibes they give off: even skeptical designers think that HartmanBaldwin is "more like working with a family than a business".
