Dealers and clients alike applaud Erica Millar for her deft designs and rooms of unassuming beauty and refined elegance. Clients appreciate these rooms for their comfortable, welcoming air and appropriateness to their lifestyles. We hear Millar often teams up with her architect husband, Russell Riccardi, resulting in very streamlined, successful collaborations.
After earning a degree in painting, Millar worked for Frank Gehry, Robert Stern, and Ward Bennett before striking out on her own in 1988. The firm does mostly substantial Manhattan residential renovations. While there is a good amount of staff support, Millar is the primary client interface and does most of the shopping herself. References say she is quite demanding of the dealers, having them restore every little scratch before delivery. If the perfect piece is not readily available, Millar has the resources to create it through her furniture partnership with the manufacturer Walter P. Sauer.
Millar charges a low design fee, a reasonable markup over net on product and an hourly consultation fee for oversight. Living rooms are generally in the $150,000 range, before major antiques and carpets. Many customers have done several projects with Millar, and recommend her "whenever they can."
