FR Review:
Clients admire Steven Harris, a "walking dictionary of architecture" who can execute projects in a "timely, diligent and responsible" manner. We're told this Yale professor is an intellectual and an inventive problem solver who can often see solutions where others cannot. While Harris takes his client's tastes and the project's setting into account, he is said to have a distinct point of view that is "highly theoretical." This may evolve into many different forms: a modern uptown townhouse, an edgy downtown space, an historic 18th-century farmhouse or a colorful Florida beach house--but all are distinct and intellectually compelling. References advise a review of Harris' distinctive portfolio before embarking on a project, but past clients wouldn't consider anyone else for future projects. Several have even insisted that Harris see a new piece of property before they purchase it.

Sources say that Harris is witty, down-to-earth and fun. He is reportedly respectful of budgets, and if necessary can turn his creativity to finding less expensive design solutions. With a reputation for flawless execution and project management, the firm cares for every conceivable detail, shields clients from the more arduous parts of the construction process, and keeps builders focused. Clients love the fact that Harris can't help but share his "extraordinary depth and breadth of knowledge." The office is eighteen people strong, and usually undertakes the interior design as well. In all projects, Harris is intimately involved in the design phase.

Harris earned a B.A. from New College, a B.F.A. from RISD and an M.Arch from Princeton. He holds a professorship at Yale's architecture school and has also taught at Princeton and Harvard. He is co-author, with Deborah Berke, of Architecture of the Everyday. Before starting his own firm in 1985, he worked with such architecture greats as Michael Graves and Charles Gwathmey.

Harris either charges a standard percentage of construction costs or a combination of this and an hourly fee. For interior design services, he typically charges an hourly fee, passing discounts on to clients. In the last ten years, Harris has done New York City townhouses, numerous large apartment renovations, and several homes around the world in various vernaculars. AD 100 2012, 2014. Elle Decor A-List. AD 100 2018 & 2019.
