FR Review:
Paul Cha brings a cerebral amalgamation of Far Eastern and Classical European influences to a diverse practice that is equally at ease working in Modernist, budget-conscience, downtown lofts and 18th-century English inspired Park Avenue residences. We hear Cha "likes working with enthusiastic and involved clients" that share a love for the design process. In turn, clients wax poetic about this firm, saying that it "gives 110%" and is an "incredible combination of Zen-like intellectual creativity and Teutonic construction precision."
Cha, a native of Taiwan with architecture degrees from Virginia and Harvard, trained with the very best: Richard Meier, Ferguson Shamamian & Rattner, and Gwathmey & Siegel. The firm takes on projects with modest budgets ranging from $250,000 to $1.5 million, the vast majority of which are gut renovations, with an occasional ground-up home in the suburbs. Nearly all of Cha's commissions are residential and take place in Manhattan, although the firm has also completed projects in the Hamptons and Rhinebeck, as well as Italy and China.
We're told Cha appreciates buildings "with good bones" and treats each project with sensitivity to budget and a strong interest in the client's lifestyle. Only a few major projects are taken on at a time so he can stay on top of all details. The firm charges a standard fee based on a percentage of overall construction costs.
Representative Client Comments:
"After floundering in the abyss of designer hell, we called on Cha and to say that we are pleased is an understatement." "Incorporated our ideas and didn't fall into the trap of using clichéd or stale design ideas." "Despite our unsightly and decrepit townhouse, Paul astutely transformed it into a luminous and exquisite home." "We gave them a budget that was quite modest, and they delivered the work as if we were Park Avenue super-elite." "Meticulous, reliable, imaginative, and always accessible, no matter how small the issue."
