Kotchen received his B.A. from Lehigh and his M.Arch. from the U. of Michigan in 1996. A year later, he established his own practice on Nantucket, relocating to NYC several years later. Berman also received his B.A. from Lehigh, and received his M.Arch. from Columbia, joining Kotchen in 1999. The vast majority of the firm's work is residential, usually 1,400 to 3,500 square feet. In addition to their extensive work throughout New York City, Workshop/APD is happy to return to their island roots on Nantucket, and recently completed an upstate lake house. Fees are surprisingly low, with a flat fee or hourlies based on the scope of the project not to exceed a very low percentage of construction.
