FR Review:
As much an institution as an auction house, Christie’s is widely recognized as a powerful global force in the art and antiques world. The North American office has been headquartered in Rockefeller Center since 1999, but the history of the organization extends back two and a half centuries. In fact, Christie’s longevity is key to its reputation, and a central reason why it–along with Sotheby’s–dominates the high-end auction market.

Christie’s primary business is auctions. Its appraisal services are geared to that activity and are tailored to represent the seller’s interests. Christie’s large and knowledgeable staff covers a wide range of specialty areas, including American furniture and decorative art, American paintings, antiquities, books and manuscripts, Chinese ceramics and works of art, Chinese paintings, contemporary art, European ceramics and glass, European furniture and works of art—to name just a few. The company’s authority and size carry a lot of weight in the art world, but its scale can lead to inconsistent service–most sources report diligent and authoritative appraisers, but some felt that the experience was rushed and incomplete. Clients can submit up to six pieces for a free informal valuation online, though a more binding estimate will carry a cost. The cost, however, is rebated if the client chooses to auction the item within one year of the appraisal, which most find to be an excellent value.

Representative Client Comments:
“A great experience–very polite and professional.” “Wouldn’t use them for insurance appraisals, but they have the auction process down cold.” “They give a much higher priority to more valuable items. If you come in with something small, they speed you through it.” “Came within days for the appraisal and they were well-versed and very knowledgeable.”
