FR Review:
Manhattan apartment and loft owners look to Penny May and her small firm for large-scale gut renovations. Usually working on traditional apartments, May is said to take cues from the classic architectural bones while incorporating modern twists to "avoid predictability." We hear May is highly involved in every project and puts clients at ease with her pleasant demeanor and commitment to personal attention.

This firm of four was created in 1992 by May, a graduate of Barnard College and the Columbia University School of Architecture. Typically, only three to four major residential projects are done at a time, keeping May accessible to clients. Most of the firm's work is on prewar apartments on the Upper East Side, in the 2,200 to 2,500 square foot range. May has also completed residential projects in the Hamptons, Westchester County, Connecticut, and New Jersey.

The firm charges a somewhat less than standard percentage of overall construction costs. Willing to go in stages at the behest of the client, the architect is said to present realistic estimates upfront.

Representative Client Comments:
"Transformed our apartment from an ugly duckling to a lovely swan." "There are virtually no unknowns when we get a set of drawings from Penny." "Penny is very pleasant and clear; a straight shooter." "She designed the whole thing and then found a cabinet maker which was much better than Smallbone at much less cost." "All hand-painted, and she found the crew." "Great also at organizing and implementation." "Very easygoing, but professional." "Tried to resolve any conflicts to the benefit of the client." "Can also do contemporary." "Not grandiose ideas. Practical." "Virtually everything in the apartment was changed, with an effect nothing short of spectacular." "I would urge a friend to use May Architects if they want the best that reflects their aesthetic and stays within budget. Simply the best!" "The whole flows as one with fine, detailed areas and broad swatches of rich color and gave us a home with an atmosphere that was beyond our dreams and well within budget."

Project Description & Comments:
A complicated TriBeCa renovation, Penny May combined creative, contemporary elements with traditional elements with great imagination and success. The whole flows as one with fine, detailed areas and broad swatches of rich color and gave us a home with an atmosphere that was beyond our dreams and well within budget. Penny May works wonders in her realistic, common sense, creative and experienced way. That she is a joy to work with is an added bonus. We would work with no one by Penny May in future!
