FR Review:
With Michael Pierce on architecture and DD Allen on interior design, many clients feel that they have found the "dynamic duo" of leading-edge style, radiant with character and warmth. The pair is said to be particularly creative with color (eggplant, lime ice walls) and original materials (leather floors, pony-skin chairs, stainless steel tables), and known to take the edge off with antiques. They take pleasure in incorporating the clients' view and are said to be easy to work with and "not stuffy."
While the firm can claim a roster of high profile clients, including many Hollywood superstars (Matt Damon, Tommy Tune, Ellen Barkin, Tracey Ullman, Ben Affleck), "regular" clients also sing their praises. Pierce holds a master's in architecture from Harvard and Allen holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia. The firm was founded in 1986 and about half its clients call on Pierce Allen for both disciplines. The back office is said to be very professional and committed.
The firm works with a Standard design fee, a Reasonable markup on products, a Lower markup on antiques and a Standard architectural fee (which eliminates the need for an oversight fee). References report that they are "not exactly budget conscience" but not outrageous either. City living rooms run in the $250,000 to $350,000 range with beach houses at less than $100,000. Bills are sent periodically with no surprises. Patrons say that the partners have the pulse of every secret source in New York and recommend them highly.
Representative Client Comments:
"A New York treasure--they have superb taste and follow through flawlessly." "Fabrics in the $400-per-yard area do not faze them. They are committed to the highest possible quality and do it up." "They are real people who will artfully handle normal jobs." "While I first engaged them before they were 'known,' they happily updated just one room for me." "DD is a true artist." "Ordinary apartments become dashingly dapper." "Since their star has risen, they haven't been as available for smaller projects, unless it's something interesting." "They should be on the American Team (of architects and designers) at the 2004 Olympics." "Thoughtful, relaxed and very, very smart." "Discreet and protective of their clients." "I recommend them to everyone." "They find fresh ways to incorporate the city into their designs. True New Yorkers." "Fun with a capital ëF.'" "I have used them on six projects over six years and have always been thrilled with the results."
