FR Review:
A perfectionist with an extensive range, Brian McCarthy can do extraordinary in many different stylistic languages. In all cases, he works with a traditionalist’s understanding of history and a modernist’s editing acumen–his clients get “the authentic version” of whatever they ask for, be it 40s Hollywood or French Regency. McCarthy likes to start with backgrounds, upgrading the millwork, textures and architectural finishes until the stage has been set. He then layers intelligently, building a room with custom furnishings and fine art until the perfect balance is struck. McCarthy's greatest pleasure lies in wielding his design fluency to exceed expectations; his clients’ dreams aren’t the end goal, but the starting point.
A graduate of Pratt and a former partner at Parish-Hadley, McCarthy started his eponymous firm in 1991. His clients are generally very well established, many with substantial apartments or stately homes, and looking to create a personal magnum opus. Most of the work is done in the city, but recent projects also include homes in St. Tropez, Switzerland, Monaco, Southampton and Greenwich, many of which are featured in the firm’s recently published book–Luminous Interiors. Supporters say the client service is outstanding–issues disappear and billing is presented clearly. Longtime partner Daniel Sager keeps everything on track with a positive spirit while McCarthy is hailed for his depth of knowledge, clarity of presentation and warm personality. With twelve on staff including a satellite employee in Paris, about eight active projects are pursued at a time.
Projects often involve extensive custom work, art and antiques–the firm is not for those looking to do a project on the quick and cheap. However, markups and fees are in line with industry standards, and references report that McCarthy is “100 percent worth it.” Supporters are protective, considering him a friend and a fabulous secret source–they can’t wait to embark on their next project.
