FR Review:
A veteran of the industry, Douglas Larson dedicates his time to high-end integrated residential architecture as well as civic and institutional projects in New York City and Pine Plains. Larson has executed gut renovations and developed stylish homes with strong, clean lines that are referential but not beholden to historical precedent. Comfortable with a range of styles and idioms, Larson uses this knowledge as best applied to the context of the situation. Most of the projects are substantial in size and scope. It's a faculty for excellent full service that distinguishes his firm.
Larson holds degrees in environmental and structural engineering from U. Penn and a M. Arch. from U. Michigan, after which he worked with Shope Reno Wharton and then Peter Marino. After productive partnerships with Bell Larson and Larson Paul, Larson started his own firm in 2017, based in midtown Manhattan. The firm has a staff of 9 with roughly 50% of its work in the residential and institutional market and the remainder in retail boutiques. Larson has been the designer of the classic J. McLaughlin stores throughout the United States.
The principal is "personally thrifty and careful with budgets," which can start as low as $200,000. A range of economic alternatives are given for all situations. We hear they do appreciate quality, though, and "don't believe in cutting corners." The firm charges a combination of percentage of construction and hourly rates.
Representative Client Comments:
"Incredible dedication." "Clean, traditional, upper-end. Can handle Park Ave." "When you find someone with the skill and focus of Doug you do not give them up. We have used him for many projects for the last seven years." "They are very deep into the detail and have all the requisite knowledge." "A scholarly approach. We learned so much." "They knew precisely what kinds of furniture finishes would stand the moisture in the air of the house on Long Island and directed us to think about styles that would work with that." "Very responsible."
