FR Review:
With their indelible signature of curvilinear planes and sculpted hierarchy, Charles Gwathmey and Robert Siegel have earned a devoted following and more than 100 awards. While better known for their institutional projects such as the celebrated addition to the Guggenheim Museum and buildings for Harvard, Princeton, and Cornell, the firm also takes on residential works--usually voluminous new homes for high profile clients. In Manhattan, they have done gut renovations for Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Spielberg and various other creative souls. Adapted to city life, Gwathmey's forms become sloping and curving walls, multifarious ceiling heights and inventive geometries of light producing an articulated flow. Clients feel as if they collaborate with the firm to create a work of art.
Gwathmey, a Fulbright scholar, graduated from Yale in 1962 with a M.Arch. and became an AIA Fellow in 1981. Siegel, a graduate of Pratt and Harvard, is president of Pratt's board of trustees and became an AIA Fellow in 1991. Both architects have taught at some of the country's most prestigious universities. Their high-powered firm of 80 was founded in 1967. We're told these architects believe that complete architectural solution includes interior design and that their distinct look is usually considered most hospitable to mid-century furnishings.
Not surprisingly, the firm's few residential projects command exceptional budgets and receive incredible, yet understated detailing. The working documents are said to be exceptional. The firm charges a significantly higher percentage of total construction costs. AD 100, 2000, 2002, 2004. ID Hall of Fame.
