FR Review:
Robert Stern's influence in the architectural community is strong and deep. Stern is known as a passionate architect who views architecture as the embodiment of social values and culture. While about two-thirds of his projects are institutional and commercial, he made his name designing houses and his firm continues to always have more than a few on the docket. Stern will embark on a project only after he has familiarized himself with the local building traditions as well as the wishes and styles of the individual clients. He will usually interpret styles and materials to uniquely suit each project. Past designs include sprawling, gabled, shingle-style houses on Long Island (a specialty), a Regency home in Bel Air, a Jeffersonian construct at the University of Virginia, a simple clapboard museum in Massachusetts and an 85-foot version of Mickey's conical hat for Disney's new building in Burbank. He believes in the dream and delivers.

Stern's namesake firm employs 300 professionals, and still Stern reportedly is involved with the design of all projects and reviews them at every stage. The firm often does interior design work to complement the architecture, including the design of custom furniture. Manhattan clients say that Stern tends to focus his design on one or more centers of the house, which "always look phenomenal." Given his huge and loyal following, it is unsurprising that he can't always cater to the needs of the "mere mortal in need of good closet space," but still he is said to deliver something extraordinary every time.

Currently the dean of his alma mater, the Yale School of Architecture, he has written and edited over twenty books on design, taught thousands of students at Columbia and Yale and hosted a PBS series. As a practitioner, he was influenced early on by Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright and Robert Venturi. Through the years, however, he began incorporating classical elements (such as extensive arches and moldings) into his tailored designs. Today, he describes himself as a modern traditionalist, and his works relate more closely to their historical prototypes. Very little is started for under $2 million. But you can rent or purchase an apartment in a chic Stern designed building, of which there are seven-and-counting in NYC—covering many neighborhoods, from Battery Park to Tribeca, and the Upper East and West Sides. Stern AIA Fellow 1984. AD 100, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2014. ID Hall of Fame.

Representative Client Comments:
"When you sign on to the Stern program, you get a masterpiece." "The furnishings always look fabulous, but sometimes form takes precedence over function." "When you work with Bob you know he has an incredible vision, but you do not always know what that vision is. Nevertheless, you are comfortable it will turn out magnificently, and it does." "HE interviews YOU." "Despite the large office, Bob really makes an effort to have every project be original and be involved in the creation of that dream." "He has to have the leeway to make one or two rooms an over-the-top fantasy, and the rest of the rooms can stay within budget." "As an architect myself, I can state that lots of people emulate Bob's designs, but he still does it best." "Working with Bob is an experience I would not have traded for anything." "A living legend."
