With polish and stylistic ease, Sherrill Canet sets the stage for gracious Gold Coast and city living. Clients praise Canet for her personalized designs, knowledge of fine English and French antiques, and accommodating nature. Designs are said to start with the architecture and to develop based on the clients’ interests and lifestyle. While offering a range of choices, the interiors are generally based on a clean, traditional style with unique objects and details—she is especially adept at using “sculptural curves and patterned fabrics” for effect. Moving slowly away from a mid-century base, Canet’s recent work incorporates more of a patina. Discrete clients commend Canet for her designs of understated elegance, and for her ability to find unique harmonies between the old and the new.
Canet, a veteran of the London antiques scene, first studied economics at Fordham and then design at the Inchbald School of Design. Beginning her business on the retail side with Bellwether Antiques in Locust Valley, interior design was a natural evolution. With a staff of six, the firm accepts approximately a dozen projects annually, many of which are substantial in scope and budget. While the bulk of its work takes place in Long Island and Greenwich, the firm does significant projects in Manhattan and Palm Beach. Recently Canet launched a product line with Stark, 40 pieces strong and growing. Clients are charged standard design fees and reasonable product markups, with lower hourly rates for drawing and drafting. Living rooms are typically in the $75,000 to $100,000 neighborhood. Canet will do individual rooms (usually the kitchen) if the project is right. Clients commend her “personable professionalism” and say they can’t wait to embark on their next project.
