Elias Maldanado may run a small shop, but he has quite a reputation. Established in 1997, Maldonado started restoring in 1983 while working at Sotheby’s. Maldonado finished the four-year apprenticeship training program there and continued to work for the famed auction house for eight more years. What started as a one-man freelance shop is now a full-fl edged company with six full-time employees.
Maldonado specializes in reconditioning antique restoration, French polishing, antiquing, color matching, structural repairs and general waxing. The firm works with wood, leather and goat, and crocodile skins. Most of the work is done in their 5,000-square-foot workshop but Elias and his team will also go on-site for special projects.
Maldonado works with members of the trade and private clients. This company also does special on-site services like reconditioning an entire room’s architectural millwork–bringing back the original finishes and texture that may have faded over time. Pricing for restoration of freestanding furniture is per hour ($75-124 an hour), while an entire room is priced per project, with minimums starting at $15/square foot. The firm has been featured in the internationally renowned Cinoa Publications, on The Martha Stewart Show and on Close-Up TV news.
