Bottom Line:
Go to Waterworks in Soho.
Project Description & Comments:
I just want to be clear. I only wanted to get some information about some of the fixtures and wasn't interested in hiring anybody so I don't know what the quality of their work as a contractor.
They must be pretty good because they're sure not making friends with their attitude. All I did was stop in their store and it was almost as if they wanted me to turn around leave.
Which I did. And noticed on the way out how filthy their display window facing Broadway is.
I hate being treated rudely. Maybe it was because I wasn't dressed.

Bottom Line:
My experience (on both projects) was exceptionally good. I have already recommended them, and will continue to do so.
Project Description & Comments:
I worked with Al at BKB back in 2000 when I first bought my Greenwich Village coop apt on E. 10th St. I did a complete, basic renovation of the bathroom (cost ~$12K), and everything turned out great. Al gave his candid advice when asked, and simplified all the planning by narrowing down the choices for me (I am a budget-conscious renovator, but not the most decisive when it comes to choosing fixtures and cabinets). Al shepherded the project from start to finish, always kept his word, and completed the project as planned and on budget. A few years later, I recommended Al to my girlfriend who needed a bathroom upgrade, and she used BKB for her apt on W. 86th St. My bathroom still looks great after 12 years of use, much of which was to renters (who are hard on bathrooms).
Fast forward twelve years, this summer I just used Al and BKB to complete a basic, full kitchen renovation (cost ~$16K). As most NYers know, the timing of a renovation is always a bit dicey because of coop board approval, availability of materials and labor, etc. And I was handling the project from long distance because I no longer live in NYC (it is a rental property now). But Al handled the whole process with the same efficiency as he did with my bathroom 12 years ago. He gave me advice on cabinets, finishes, fixtures, tile, countertop options, even lighting. Al is a straight-shooter and took care of everything from the scope of work, coop approvals, alteration agreement, photos, measurements, apt access, cleanup…basically everything. I had a couple of changes (countertop upgrade) during the work, and Al handled the changes with no problem or delay. We have never had any issues related to monetary/contract stuff, because they did what they promised, and I paid them promptly in the agreed-upon installments.
I wholeheartedly recommend BKB and Al in particular. What I like about BKB is the turnkey and no-surprises approach. They handled all of the details, simplified the process, and completed the work exactly as they say they would. And the pricing for the projects was very reasonable. This is how all projects should go – I give them the parameters, they propose the details, we agree on the work, they complete the work, and I pay them on time. Successful project completed.
Cost of Project:
$10,001 - 50,000
