FR Review:
Still forward thinking and adventurous after over 35 years in the business, Peter Shelton and Lee Mindel are icons of the "simplicity through rigor" mantra. The pair is lauded for its ability to lure clients into the spell of contemporary clarity with refined, controlled spaces that are minimal yet rich in detail. After three decades in business the firm is characterized by a signature style best described as Beguiling Modern with an underlying Blue Chip mentality. The architects are also intimately involved in the interior design of their spaces, often creating custom furniture and lighting schemes that are said to be "brushstrokes of the larger plan."

Clients report partners Shelton and Mindel are "smart, likeable, conscientious" architects who "exhibit zero attitude." The firm is also highly respected throughout the building and design professions. While we hear the focus with which the firm pursues the realization of its design vision sometimes leaves less regard for creature comforts, clients say there's no question they feel at home in Shelton and Mindel's highly original, deft architecture. The company has worked in many of Manhattan's best buildings, with 6,000 square feet being the norm.

Both began their studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Shelton graduated from Pratt in 1975 and then joined Edward Durell Stone and later Emery Roth & Sons. Mindel graduated from Harvard in 1976 and worked for Skidmore, Owings & Merill and then Rogers, Butler, Burgun. The firm was founded in 1978 and currently employs about fifteen people. There is an intellectual, collegial atmosphere at the office and many of the staff have been there for over fifteen years. The team has received many tributes, including twenty-eight AIA awards and a place in the Interior Design Hall of Fame. The company also designs products for Waterworks, Knoll, Nessen Lighting and V'Soske. A flat percentage of the overall construction is charged to cover both architecture and design fees. AIA Fellows. AD 100, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2014. ID Hall of Fame. AD 100 2018.
