FR Review:
Still forward thinking and adventurous after over 45 years in the business, Lee Mindel remains an icon of the "simplicity through rigor" mantra. Lauded for the ability to lure clients into the spell of contemporary clarity with refined, controlled spaces that are minimal yet rich in detail. After four decades in business the firm is characterized by a signature style best described as Beguiling Modern with an underlying Blue Chip mentality. The architects are also intimately involved in the interior design of their spaces, often creating custom furniture and lighting schemes that are said to be "brushstrokes of the larger plan."
Clients report that Mindel is "smart, likeable, conscientious" architects who "exhibits zero attitude." The firm is also highly respected throughout the building and design professions. While we hear the focus with which the firm pursues the realization of its design vision sometimes leaves less regard for creature comforts, clients say there's no question they feel at home in the highly original, deft architecture. The company has worked in many of Manhattan's best buildings, with 6,000 square feet being the norm.
Mindel graduated the UPenn, and then Harvard in 1976 and worked for Skidmore, Owings & Merill and then Rogers, Butler, Burgun. The firm was founded in 1978 and currently employs about fifteen people. There is an intellectual, collegial atmosphere at the office and many of the staff have been there for over fifteen years. The team has received many tributes, including 32 AIA awards. The late Peter Shelton and Lee Mindel, were recognized as the Deans of American Design, inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame and received the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award awarded at The White House by First Lady Michelle Obama. The company also designs products for Waterworks, Knoll, Nessen Lighting and V'Soske. A flat percentage of the overall construction is charged to cover both architecture and design fees. AIA Fellows. AD 100, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2014. ID Hall of Fame. AD 100 2018.
